Jozi is more selfie obsessed than Cape Town

It’s official. Johannesburg contains more mildly narcissistic Instagram users per capita than Cape Town. This shocking news is courtesy of TIME who conducted two separate five day investigations into which city was the ‘selfiest city’ in the world. The winner was Makati City in the Philippines, and while there are five South African cities that made it into the 459-city-long list, none of them even managed to break into the top 300.

To make up the list TIME looks at any city with more than a quarter of a million residents that had posted at least 25 selfies and looked for any matching pictures within eight kms to make up the list. Over 400 000 qualifying images were captured over the ten days on Instagram which had to have both the #selfie hashtag as well as having the location data open for anyone to see. This of course means that anyone who didn’t tag their selfies or who would rather post selfies from a private location would have been left out of the survey. The amount of selfies per city were then divided by the population of the city to work out the SPC (selfies per capita).

 The Winners

  1. Makati City and Pasig, Philippines – 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  2. Manhattan, N.Y. – 202 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  3. Miami, Fla. – 155 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  4. Anaheim and Santa Ana, Calif. – 147 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  5. Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – 141 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  6. Tel Aviv, Israel – 139 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  7. Manchester, England – 114 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  8. Milan, Italy – 108 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  9. Cebu City, Philippines – 99 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  10. George Town, Malaysia – 95 selfie-takers per 100,000 people

South Africa

  1. Johannesburg, South Africa – 7 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  1. Cape Town, South Africa – 6 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  1. Pretoria, South Africa – 4 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  1. Port Elizabeth, South Africa – 3 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
  1. Durban, South Africa – 2 selfie-takers per 100,000 people

Selfies are of course big business with Ellen’s Oscar selfie breaking all kinds of Twitter records earlier this month and helping Samsung’s PR efforts out at the same time. The selfie even has its own theme song now from The Chainsmokers getting radio play in South Africa.
