African company beats Apple to launch diverse emojis

Last week, Apple announced it would create emojis that reflect diversity in race after a point about the lack of colour in emojis was raised… but an African telecoms company has already beaten the US giant to it.

Mauritius-based Oju Africa, a division if Mi Fone, launched the Oju Emoticon App for Android recently. The best part is, you can use them in any instant messaging service on your phone, the only catch is that it’s sent as an image, so you can’t attach any text to it.

“We follow global trends but we are differentiated by our authentic African voice. So as a brand we wanted to do something that only Africa could pull off, something that could become so iconic that it would have the world talking. I believe what we have created will ensure that every African on the planet won’t be able to help but love it,” said Oju Africa’s creative director, Eserick Fouchehe.
