Twitter purchases contextual app Cover

Twitter has splashed out some of its cash reserves to pick up Cover, a context sensitive Android lock screen replacement app that first hit our radars last year when it launched. Cover promises to give you the right apps at the right time no matter where you are by learning which apps you use and where you use them.

While the details of the price paid for Cover have not been revealed we heavily suspect that the price is not of the calibre of a Facebook acquisition which can run anywhere from $2 billion for a different way to see the world to $19 billion for a rival messaging service.

Cover’s contextual app launching lock screen uses four location-based profiles – Home, Work, Out and Car – each of which have a set of apps that you use most in each location ready to be quick launched from the second you wake your phone up from its slumber. The profiles are defined by asking for your home and work addresses and their respective WiFi networks so that it can tell when you’ve arrived at either. It then relies on a Bluetooth connection to your car’s built-in car kit or a sustained distance of travel once you leave your home or work location to figure out that you’re in a car and the Out profile fills the gap for the rest of the time.

Cover then learns which apps you use most frequently in each location and puts them at the top of a list on the lock screen, swiping any icon unlocks your phone and launches the app immediately for you to use. Because of the Android operating system’s open nature Cover is only available for Google’s platform and interestingly it shows a recognition from Twitter of the potential to use Android’s open platform to create a new generation of aware apps which would be near impossible to create in the much stricter, closed environment of Apple’s iOS.

Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android. They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen. We’ll be building upon a lot of what makes Cover great, and we’re thrilled to create something even better at Twitter.
