The internet is a treasure trove with millions of books, articles and magazines online, so if you’re looking for a good read, these five (mostly free) Windows 8.1 book apps are ideal downloads.

Kindle

Amazon’s Kindle app gives you access to over one million books in the Kindle Store. If you have any other devices with Kindle installed, you can just sync all your devices so that you have your books on each device and no matter which device you use, Kindle will bookmark where you stopped reading. If you want to purchase more books, Kindle will redirect you to the Amazon online store.

Bookviser

On Bookviser, you can read eBooks straight from your device for free, all you need is an internet connection to download books from the app. You can boomark, add notes, highlight, look up a word or sentence and change the fonts of the books you’re reading. If you happen to come across a word you don’t understand, you can search for it’s meaning on Google or any dictionary installed on your device, directly from the app.

Zinio gives you access to tons of magazines from around the world including local titles such as YOU, People, Food and Home, Destiny and more. The added advantage about Zinio is that you can buy issues that aren’t even out in stores yet as well as previous issues that you may have missed. You can choose between buying just one issue or subscribing to your favourite magazine and once you’ve done so, you can read offline.
