Amazon has just taken another major step in sewing up the entire spectrum of the digital media distribution market with the announcement that it has acquired digital comics book store comiXology. The comic book seller has over 50 000 titles available for download from more than 75 different publishers including the massive collections of the two industry powerhouses, Marvel and DC Comics, which makes comiXology one of the biggest names in the comic book business let alone in the digital distribution of them.

ComiXology offers free viewing apps for iPad, iPhone, Android, Kindle Fire as well as Windows 8 with a built in store front that strongly resembles the way Amazon has set up its Kindle digital book ecosystem. The comiXology store front also allows comic book creators to self publish and sell their comics, which is another similarity in that it has to the way Amazon does business with its self-publishing platform for Kindle books.

Like Amazon, the comiXology team have developed proprietary software that they use in presenting the content to their users. The Guided View technology let’s comic book artist tell a story by evolving the picture one frame at a time creating a narrative instead of just a single picture.

The comiXology app for iPad was one of the top 10 highest earning apps in both 2011 and 2012 and became the top grossing non-game iPad app in 2012 and 2013 making them just one of two non-games in Apple’s Top 20 Grossing apps for 2013.

ComiXology will continue to run as a separate service to Amazon’s Kindle library and will retain its own branding and name for the foreseeable future according to a letter from its CEO David Steinberger.
