Watch_Dogs “ultra” PC specs revealed

Watch_Dogs’ creative director, Jonathan Morin, tweeted over the weekend that to see the game at its highest fidelity, with all the graphics bells and whistles enabled and running at a smooth frame rate, gamers will need a GeForce GTX 780 graphics card and an Intel Core i7-4770 processor. That’s no small ask, considering the costs involved.

To give you an idea of just how expensive playing at “ultra” will be, a GeForce GTX780 averages around R8 000 and that Haswell processor starts at just below R4 000. And that’s before you’ve upgraded your motherboard, bought new RAM and purchased a new power supply to keep those components juiced. That’s a fine argument to just get it on PS4 right there, but then you’ll miss out on this:

Morin also tweeted that the only technology present in NVIDIA cards not present in AMD cards is NVIDIA’s TXAA anti-aliasing tech.

The implication, although not explicitly stated, is that owners of high-end AMD cards (Radeon R9 280 and above) should get similar visual quality out of the game.

The minimum and recommended specs for the game were released earlier this month, and these aren’t too bad:

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows Vista (SP2), Windows 7 (SP1) or Windows 8 (Please note that we only support 64 bit OSs.)
  • Processor: Eight core – Intel Core i7-3770 @3.5 GHz or AMD FX-8350 X8 @ 4 GHz
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DirectX 11 graphics card with 2 GB Video RAM – Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 ti or AMD Radeon HD 7850
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Hard Drive: 25 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Sound Card with Latest Drivers
  • Additional Notes: Broadband connection and service required for multiplayer mode. Supported Video Cards at Time of Release: nVidia GeForce GTX460 or better, GT500, GT600, GT700 series; AMD Radeon HD5850 or better, HD6000, HD7000, R7 and R9 series Intel Iris Pro HD 5200

Watch_Dogs is still on course for a May 27 release, so you’ve got a month and a half to find the cash to upgrade your rig. Or, you could be more sensible and buy a PS4, a handful of games and pre-order Watch_Dogs for the platform for less.
