FNB apologises for Twitter storm after bizarre ‘Steve’ update

With all the public holidays around Easter, Freedom Day, Labour Day, Day Day and Day of the Dead (are you shure this is right? – Ed) crammed into a tiny couple of week period over the end of this month, lots of people are using the spread of freetime to maximise their workplace holiday allowance by taking some extended time off. We can only assume that the regular maintainer of Twitter account @RBJacobs – aka the online voice of FNB – is one of those.

Because if it wasn’t an intern that caused today’s Twitterstorm in a teacup, the bank has lost all of the social savvy it’s famously built up over the last few years.

This morning, someone asked RBJacobs “What happened to Steve?”, a reference to a new radio ad campaign the bank is running and an innocuous if bland question.

The reply (now deleted), however, was anything but.

He’s some where in Afghanistan, putting a bomb under a wheelchair and telling the cripple to run for it!

Said Jacobs.

And Twitter, rightfully, exploded.

The bank has issued an apology from the same account, but as one commenter pointed out. “Damage done”.
