VIDEO: Eight minutes of Watch_Dogs’ multiplayer action

The official Watch_Dogs YouTube channel has posted a nine-minute video containing eight or so minutes of multiplayer footage, so if you’re in any way hazy about how it’s going to work, you should definitely check it out.

The video does a great job of explaining the game’s three main multiplayer modes, and how the online and single-player features of the game blend seamlessly together.

The first part shows off how undertaking a “hacking contract” plays out, the second shows how a player using the mobile companion app can mess with other players by pitting the city’s electronically-controlled obstacles against them from a tablet or phone. The last section shows a team-based mode called Competitive Decryption Combat in which teams of four compete to retrieve and decrypt hotly-contested data.

While the first two modes look like fun, it’s Competitive Decryption Combat that looks like the most fun – it appears stuffed to the gills with possibility as it lets players use the entire game world to create diversions, traps, defences and more as they fight over the encrypted data. I can’t wait to see the inevitable YouTube videos hit the ‘net of teams using the city in creative ways the developers weren’t even aware of.

I’m sure you’ll agree, Watch_Dogs is looking pretty good. Happily, its release is just over a month away (May 27) so there’s not much of a wait left before we can all take over future Chicago using nothing more than our virtual cell phones.
