In with the old, in with the new: Star Wars Episode VII cast announced

We’re big Star Wars fans here at the htxt.africa offices, and we were only too happy to finally learn who is going to star in Episode VII, the long overdue follow-up to Return of the Jedi that’s set for release on December 18, 2015.

Disney-owned LucasFilm announced the cast list yesterday, confirming rumours that the actors who played Luke Skywalker Princess Leia, Chewbacca and the robots C3P0 and R2-D2 will reprise their roles. Slightly more surprising was the news that Harrisson Ford is returning as Han Solo – Ford has always made it clear that he didn’t enjoy the role and had no desire to repeat it. The rumour mill suggests that Ford’s role is going to be significantly larger than expected too.

Several new faces were announced alongside those franchise vets. Many are TV or movie stars: John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley (BlueSeason, Scrawl), Adam Driver (an HBO show called Girls), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, Drive), Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings), Domhnall Gleeson (Boy Eats Girl, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), and Max von Sydow, him of The Seventh Seal and The Exorcist will play alongside Fisher et al in as-yet unknown roles.

The official Star Wars website post includes Director JJ Abrams waxing eloquent about his cast: “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

While this news is undoubtedly very cool, I can’t help but wonder how the “senior” actors are going to fit into the storyline, and how much makeup and CGI is going to be needed to make them all not look their age. To put that in perspective, Fisher is 57, Hamill is 62 and Harrison Ford is 71, so they’re not exactly in peak physical condition.

At least the robots’ faces aren’t an issue. What do you all think?
