How to track a stolen BlackBerry smartphone

This post is part of a series on how to locate devices on any of the four major smartphone operating systems. If this isn’t the right guide for your device, you can go back to the main article for links to the others.

BlackBerry may no longer sit in the smartphone throne as king, but we should never forget the fact that the Canadian company has always had the edge when it came to security. BlackBerry Protect is available for BlackBerry smartphones running both legacy versions of the software i.e. BlackBerry 5,6,7 and the newer models running BlackBerry 10 OS.

Features

  • View Location – Shows you the current location of your BlackBerry on a map.
  • Play Sound – Forces your device to play a ringing sound for one minute, after which it responds to incoming calls in the way that you have specified in your ‘Loud’ profile.
  • Display a Message – Locks you smartphone and displays a customised message on the lock screen.
  • Lock Device – Lock your smartphone and activate or even change the password to unlock the phone.
  • Wipe Device – Wiping your device will permanently delete all data from your device and, if you are running OS 7.1 or earlier, your media card as well. You will not be able to use BlackBerry Protect to locate your device after wiping it.

How to set up BlackBerry Protect on a BlackBerry 10 device

  • On your BlackBerry device, swipe down from the top of the home screen.
  • Tap Settings and scroll down to BlackBerry Protect.
  • Set the BlackBerry Protect switch to ‘On’.
  • For the ability to view the current location of your device on a map, tap Location Settings. Set the Location Services switch to ‘On’.

How to set up BlackBerry Protect on a device running BlackBerry 7.1 or earlier

  • The BlackBerry Protect application must be installed on your BlackBerry device. You can download the BlackBerry Protect application from the BlackBerry World storefront.
  • Find and open the BlackBerry Protect app.
  • Complete the instructions on the screen to register your device for BlackBerry protect.
