MTN uncaps Gareth Cliff’s unradio station

MTN has announced that it will offer its clients the ability to enjoy Gareth Cliff’s CliffCentral.com internet radio station free from the worry of high data bills until the 30th of June. The offer is available to any MTN customer whether they have a prepaid SIM, postpaid account or a top-up style account with the network.

To activate the deal MTN clients must have one of the operator’s new bolt-on internet packages active on their accounts. There are five packages which range in price from R10 to R39 which can easily be activated using USSD shortcodes. The bundles are active for a single billing cycle for contract and top-up subscribers and for a calendar month for prepaid customers.

To activate a bundle, dial *141*2# from your MTN cellphone and select option 2 – ‘BlackBerry and Internet Services’ from the menu. From there you can select which of the five bundles you want to activate.

According to Brian Gouldie, the chief marketing officer at MTN SA:

“The free streaming of CliffCentral on WeChat is available to all MTN customers who have purchased one of the revamped MTN internet services. No data limits will apply to the free streaming service of CliffCentral with the promotion running until 30 June 2014. However, customers need to download the WeChat app to their mobile device which is available for free on the app store of their preference.

This promotion can be attributed to the close working relationship that exists between MTN and over-the-top content providers. It provides MTN customers with the perfect opportunity to embrace this innovative streaming service and enrich their lives with value-added content.

WeChat is one of the fastest-growing platforms and, coupled with the excitement that Gareth Cliff brings, this free access will go a long way in providing our customers with access to the ever-evolving digital world.”

Cliff’s high-profile split from the SABC to start his own internet streaming station has given some serious credibility to the concept of streaming radio for most South Africans. However the high data costs associated with it may in fact be the one thing holding it back from becoming a serious challenger.
