Jawbone UP fitness tracker coming to SA in May

Nike may have pulled its health spy wristband, the Fuelband, but that doesn’t mean wearables are dead. Hot on the heels of Samsung’s megalaunch of arm encasing health-o-digitology, maker of Bluetooth headsets and speakers, Jawbone, has announced that it’s bringing its newest fitness gizmos to South Africa too.

The energetically named UP and the UP24 will come in three sizes each – small medium and large – with a range of colours that include Onyx, Persimmon and Pink Coral. Or as most people will call them: black, orange and pink. The difference between which of the two models you will buy is based on whether your smartphone or tablet has Bluetooth 4.0 (otherwise known as Bluetooth LE or Bluetooth Smart) or not. That’s because the UP24 uses the low energy Bluetooth connection to keep in constant contact with your smartphone, transferring information as it goes whereas the regular UP requires you to plug it into your smartphone’s headphone jack to upload data. It works with iOS and Android

Jawbone says that the app, when linked to an UP band, will keep its beady’s on every part of your life whether it be exercise, sleep or nutrition. The app will then make recommendations and help you set daily goals to change your habits into healthier ones like drinking more water or getting a better night’s sleep.

If you’re anything like I am, then you love being able to track everything while you’re exercising or just sitting at your desk. From calories burned, to kilograms lifted in the gym and how well you’re sleeping the more you know about how your body is performing, the better you can adapt to keep ahead of the curve. My problem with fitness trackers until now has been that none of them have used the data given to them to help you improve, which is why I’m excited to review the UP24 when it arrives at the htxt.africa offices.

UP and UP24 will be available at Dion Wired, Incredible Connection, Kalahari.com, as well as TakeALot.com from the 5th May at a recommended retail price of R1 499 for the UP and R1 899 for the UP24. The fitness wearable category is already becoming saturated in South Africa with the likes of the R1 399 Fitbit Flex which has already been available in the South African market since July and of course Samsung’s Gear Fit which launched with the Galaxy S5 last month.
