Yesterday South Africans flocked to the polls to participate in the country’s fifth general elections, and of course social media was with them every step of the way. Worthy of note is picture sharing service Instagram, which saw a massive spike in use as people were encouraged to use the #VoteSA hashtag to mark the occasion.

From early in the morning with just a few hundred pictures the hashtag started to gain momentum as the day wore on passing the 3 000 mark at around two o’clock in the afternoon. At the time of writing there were 5 870 photos with a few still trickling in as results begin to filter through the various news organisations.

The @southafrica Instagram account featured some of the best photos of the day by republishing them for its audience and predictably even Tata Mandela made a guest appearance.

Click on any of the images to see them along with the credit to the photographers or just head on through to the @southafrica IG account and give a like to your favourite ones.
