Fake Mandela Memorial interpreter stars in streaming app advert

Thamsanqa Jantjie, the supposed sign language interpreter who made headlines all over the world for making the wrong signs while interpreting guest speakers’ speeches at the Nelson Mandela’s funeral, has been hired by an Israeli startup called LiveLens to star in its advert for its live-streaming app of the same name.

“Hi, I’m Thamsanqa Jantjies from the Nelson Mandela funeral,” Jantjies starts off in the (poorly made) ad. “Believe me, I’m a real sign language interpreter. I’m really sorry for what I did, now I want to make it up to the whole world.” Jantjies then goes on to promote the LiveLens app.

LiveLens has come under fire for making fun of Jantjies and his schizophrenia (which he blamed for his fake interpreting) but the company has defended itself saying ”At the end of the day, a schizophrenic guy got paid and did a nice campaign… We see it as sort of a sad story with a happy ending.”
