Watch: Be the real Flappy Bird

Move over Flappy Bird, some clever students have made a virtual reality bird game called Birdly using the Oculus Rift VR headset.

It lets you soar like an eagle, complete with a wing-flapping motion, a fan to simulate wind and leaning controls that let your body determine which direction you’re “flying” in. There’s even a scent machine to make you smell whatever you’re flying through.

Kotaku reports that the platform was built by a team over at the University of Zurich, and it features pneumatics that push and pull the platform according to your body’s movements. That provides the sensation of movement to complement the visuals being beamed into your brain by the Oculus Rift VR headset you’ve got strapped to your noggin.

In short, it looks amazing.

I’m completely sold on the concept of virtual reality even though I’ve never donned a VR headset in my life. This latest project looks like just the kind of thing I’d love to try when it finally becomes more mainstream (and available locally); I reckon only jacking into The Matrix would be better when it comes to convincing my brain I’m somewhere I’m not, but that day isn’t yet upon us so I’ll just have look forward to trying this sort of thing for myself.

Check it out in the video below, and be amazed.
