Fan favourite composers returning to Unreal Tournament

Last week we told you about Epic working on a new Unreal Tournament in conjunction with fans. Well, early on Friday morning two composers who’ve worked on several of the Unreal games so far appeared on the Unreal Engine forums offering to write music for the upcoming iteration, and fans went nuts.

The appearance of composers Michiel van den Bos and Alexander Brandon triggered pages upon pages of fans posting their enthusiastic support for the pair joining the team. Much was made of the soundtracks of both 1999’s Unreal Tournament and the 2004 edition, with several fans waxing eloquent about how much certain tracks stayed with them over the years.

Forum user yoshinatsu posted “If Epic really wants this game to be as authentic as we want it, this man [van den Bos] and Alexander Brandon are the only ones who should be handling this job. Their soundtrack literally changed my whole perspective in music, and their contribution to this project would be invaluable.”

Give the fans what they want

This sentiment was echoed around the forum, with user forkie summing it up: “They want to make the fans a part of the development, and the fans want Michiel and Alexander!!”

It didn’t take long for Epic to chime in, either. Project lead for the new Unreal Tournament, Steven Polge, wrote just a few hours later that “Of course we would be thrilled to have you [Michiel] and Alex involved in this project! The music you guys made always invokes tremendous nostalgia for me – I’m always instantly transported back to playing UT.”

Curious about the type of sound that fans love so much and want more of? Have a listen to Morpheus from 1999’s Unreal Tournament, posted by YouTube user VelocityDJ:

Van den Bos and Brandon’s offer was later joined by one from another composer, Kevin Riepl, who had also worked on several Unreal games. His possible participation wasn’t quite as well-received as the others, but as forum user neorej put it “I think it’s fantastic to see all of these composers appearing here in public, expressing their enthusiasm towards the idea of contributing to this project. It says a lot about how powerful this franchise is.”

Work has hardly begun on the next Unreal Tournament, but it’s clear there is a lot of excitement from the community about it already.
