Tizen-powered smartphone coming “within weeks”

The Linux-based Tizen operating system has been billed by many industry players as the next big OS for smartphones, tablets and laptops – set to compete directly with the much-used Android OS.

Mobile phone giant Samsung has already released versions of the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo running on the system, but the company is now reportedly getting ready to launch their first mobile device using Tizen.

While the company hasn’t officially released any more information on it, sources told the Wall Street Journal that Samsung is prepping a Tizen-powered smartphone for release in Russia – within the coming weeks. The launch would seem to correlate with a Tizen developer’s conference in San Francisco in June.

India has been touted along with Russia for a Tizen smartphone release, as these emerging markets don’t seem to have a preference for operating systems as long as the mobile device is affordable and present similar features to the Android OS.

While the operating system can be used with almost any electronics device that requires some form of operating system, the sources also revealed to WSJ that Samsung is gearing up for a release of Smart televisions making use of Tizen.

“Tizen for Smart TV delivers a complete, open standards-based Linux stack, optimized for living room devices, such as Blu-ray players, set top boxes, and digital TVs. It is designed for an Internet-connected TV experience, allowing users to enjoy access to multiple applications, services, and personal media, all while watching TV,” Tizen explains on their website.

There has been no official word as to when Samsung would release a Tizen-powered device in Africa.
