Sheryl Sandberg pledges half her fortune to charity

Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and her husband Dave Goldberg have joined the list of US millionaires and billionaires on The Giving Pledge, which obliges them to give away half of their entire fortunes to charity either during their lifetimes or as part of their will.

The Giving Pledge was formed by fellow mega-rich bigwigs Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates. Sandberg and Goldberg along with Google’s Craig Silverstein and his wife, Mary Obelnicki, Kinko founder Paul Orfalea and his wife, Natalie and Scottish transportation mogul Ann Gloag, join 120 other members, including Sandberg’s colleague Mark Zuckerberg, who already feature on The Giving Pledge pledger’s list.

“We are thrilled to welcome this diverse group of business leaders and philanthropists to the pledge,” Buffett said in a statement. “They bring a wealth of expertise to the group. We will learn a lot from their experiences as we collectively aim to inspire one another to earlier and better giving.”

It is not yet known which charities will be the recipients of Sandberg’s pledged fortune, but she is expected to select charities focused on women and girls as she has been working with such charities through her Lean In Foundation.
