Guess who’s got their mojo back? Well if initial sales of its Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone are anything to go by, then Samsung is back in business. After Just a month on from launch, its chalked up a whopping 11 million sales of its Galaxy S5s – at least that’s what according to the head of Samsung’s mobile business, J.K. Shin in an interview with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The Galaxy S5 is a crucial product for Samsung as a whole with more than 70% of Samsung’s overall operating profit coming from its mobile division. “It’s been a month since we began selling the S5, and out of the gate, sales are much stronger than the Galaxy S4,” Mr. Shin told the WSJ where he also noted that sales were especially good in developed markets such as the US, Australia and Germany.

This time last year it was Samsung’s Galaxy S4 making headlines as it got off to a flying start with sales hitting 10 million units within its first month on the market but sales fizzled out with the last reported number of S4 sales from the South Korean company sitting at over 40 million which put it on par with 2012’s Galaxy S III.

One of the main contributors to the success of the Galaxy S5 was the fact that Samsung launched the phone simultaneously in 125 countries including South Africa where it was available from all of the mobile operators and several other outlets as well from day one.

Interestingly, Mr Shin also shed some light on the fact that 30% of the smartphones brought into Samsung’s after-service centres for repairs were “because people were spilling coffee over them or dropping them in water,” which is why the decision was made by Samsung to give the Galaxy S5 an IP67 water and dust resistant build.

Of course, Samsung may be crowing but to put this new company record into perspective, after the launch of its latest smartphone Apple told media that it sold around 7m iPhone 5Ss in the first three days. Still got a bit of catching up to do then, Sammie.
