Dogfighting module for Star Citizen is out end May

The dogfighting portion of the upcoming space game Star Citizen is coming out on May 29. This is according to an ‘Arena Commander Weekly Report’ put out by the man behind the game, Chris Roberts.

Arena Commander, the name given to the dogfighting portion of the game will give everyone who backed the game on Kickstarter access to two single-player modes, “Free Flight” and “Vanduul Swarm”, and the first wave of those who qualify for multiplayer testing will get access to the game’s multiplayer modes at the same time.

Roberts said that as the servers prove stable, more people will be given access to those multiplayer modes so that things can be ramped up in an intelligent way, presumably so as not to over-burden the servers or tick off more people than absolutely necessary.

He noted that the time running up to that module’s release is going to be chock-full of tasks for the production team to tackle, and there’s a small chance that the release date will slip should things not go entirely smoothly. Roberts isn’t too worried, though stating that “At this point, we’re close enough that we feel fairly confident in this date… but the next two weeks will be a march!”

For a full list of what the team will be up to in the time leading up to the 29th, head over to the Weekly Report page. By the look of that list, it doesn’t look like Roberts’ team will be getting much sleep between now and then.

We want to play Star Citzen really, really bad, and so the fact that it’s releasing in stages, module by module, is a bit annoying. But we totally understand why they’re doing it that way – it’s a vast, complex game with lots of interlocking parts, and were we to wait for it all to be done and playable, we might be here a while.
