Hashtag, tweep and selfie recognised as official terms

America’s best-selling dictionary, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate, has taken a page from the Oxford Dictionary’s book and added a few popular tech terms to its newly-released 2014 revision.

Hashtag, tweep, selfie, crowdfunding and steampunk join over 150 new additions to Merriam-Webster’s online and print versions.

“These new additions…reflect the growing influence technology is having on human endeavour, especially social networking, once done mostly in person,” the company said in a press release.

When looking up hashtag, tweep, selfie and crowdfunding in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, here are the definitions you’ll find:

“So many of these new words show the impact of online connectivity on our lives and livelihoods,” said Peter Sokolowski, editor-at-large for Merriam-Webster. “Tweep, selfie, and hashtag refer to the ways we communicate and share as individuals. Words like crowdfunding show that the Internet has changed business in profound ways.”
