New PlayStations could be coming soon

PlayStation-watch site Dualshockers.com has come across a certification filing by Sony for two new “Computer Entertainment Systems” with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, an indication that the company could be working on two new PlayStation console designs.

The details are sketchy, though, as all that DualShockers.com really knows is that the filing involves incremental changes to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4’s model numbers.

Currently, the PS4’s Asian model number for the PS4 is CUH-1006A, and the certification filing is for a CUH-1106A. The second model listed in the filing is the CECH-4306CH, a number strikingly similar to that of the Slimline PS3 (CECH-4001A), leading the site to speculate that the PS3 is also the focus of an overhaul.

Going on the fact that the PS4’s model number change isn’t radical, DualShockers.com has concluded that the new PS4 won’t be earth-shatteringly different. They say its changes are most likely internal, like when the PS3 went from using a 60nm RSX graphics chip to one made with a 40nm manufacturing process, something end-users just don’t see.

The PS3 model number change, on the other hand, could indicate bigger changes, including a possible new hard drive capacity.

None of this is confirmed, of course, but it’s not unreasonable to expect Sony to say more about it all at their upcoming presentation being held at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on June 9th.
