Three biggest mobile networks fail quality tests

A monitoring test report released by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has found that MTN, Cell C and Vodacom all failed a number of network quality tests in various parts of South Africa.

According to ICASA , these tests were performed in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to identify shortcomings in the services offered by the three major mobile networks, and promote redress in the public interest.

In the Western Cape, tests were conducted in the first quarter of 2014 in the Cape Town CBD, Cape Town International Airport, Worcester and Somerset West and Stellenbosch areas. MTN failed the accessibility test in all the tested areas, while Cell C performed slightly better, only failing  in Somerset West and Stellenbosch. MTN and Cell C failed the retainability test in all tested areas in the province, while Vodacom only failed in Worcester, Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

In KwaZulu-Natal, tests were conducted in the last quarter of 2013 in Msinga, Empangeni, Durban North, KwaMashu, Richards Bay and Port Shepstone.  MTN  failed the accessibility test in Msinga, Empangeni, Richards Bay, Durban North, KwaMashu and Port Shepstone, while Cell C failed in Msinga, Richards Bay and Port Shepstone.

Vodacom failed the retainability test in Msinga, Empangeni, Durban North and KwaMashu, Cell C failed in all areas, while only failed in Msinga and Durban North and KwaMashu.

“The authority continues to improve its reports and encourages all consumers to refer their complaints to the authority should they be dissatisfied with how operators have dealt with network and service deficiencies. This will enable the authority to cross-check data provided by the operators with data provided by consumers,” said ICASA.

“The authority continues to hold that the reports will go a long way in enabling consumers to make informed choices when selecting a service provider.”
