Transport minister denies etolls are coming to KZN

Two days ago the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) announced new etoll gates would be erected at two KwaZulu-Natal highways in November, but Transport minister Dipuo Peters says the report is untrue.

“Any decision to introduce any form of tolling in any part of the country will be taken in consultation with authorities,” Peters said. “I, therefore, wish to clarify reports that a decision has been taken to introduce electronic tolling in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal as untrue.”

According to SANRAL, the KZN etolls would not be separate additional etolls like the ones in Gauteng, but would be added to the existing Mariannhill Toll Plaza on the N3 and on the N2 at the Oribi Toll Plaza.

“We are currently focused on resolving some of the challenges emanating from the introduction of electronic tolling in some parts of the Gauteng province.”
