LEGO announces ‘female scientists’ minifigure set

LEGO has announced it will be releasing a minifigure set comprising a group of female scientists after the set was successfully backed on the LEGO Ideas site.

Swedish geochemist and long-time LEGO fan Ellen Kooijman is the creator behind the set called Research Institute. “As a female scientist I had noticed two things about the available LEGO sets: a skewed male/female minifigure ratio and a rather stereotypical representation of the available female figures. It seemed logical that I would suggest a small set of female minifigures in interesting professions to make our LEGO city communities more diverse,” Kooijman wrote on her blog back in 2013.

The Research Institute set features an astronomer, chemist and a paleontologist, each with a 6 x 4 inch base plate and accessories, such as bones, vials and magnifying glass.

Kooijman’s set won the Winter 2014 Review Results after receiving more than 10 000 votes (which is required for a set to be considered for review), being evaluated by a board made up of set designers and marketing representatives.

“We’re very excited to release Ellen Kooijman’s Female Minifigure set, featuring 3 scientists, now entitled “Research Institute” as our next LEGO Ideas set. This awesome model is an inspiring set that offers a lot for kids as well as adults,” LEGO Ideas said.

LEGO predicts the set will officially be released in August this year.
