Evernote suffers DDoS attack, security not compromised

Evernote, the online service that allows you to save ideas and web clippings, announced late last night that they have been hit with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, rendering the service unusable for more than 100 million customers.

Evernote tweeted developments of the attack as soon as they became aware of it. “We’re actively working to neutralize a denial of service attack. You may experience problems accessing your Evernote while we resolve this,” the tweeted.

A DDoS attack doesn’t affect the login details or compromise the security of the website, as it only floods the site with so much fake traffic that it eventually buckles under the pressure and becomes unavailable.

Evernote spokeswoman Ronda Scott told CNET that this was the first time that the company has been subjected to such an attack, and reassured users that no data was compromised.

“We expect that there may be a hiccup here and there in the coming hours, but Evernote is now accessible. We do not know its specific origins and this is the first time Evernote has been impacted by a DDoS attack. I can confidently report as is the usual case with these types of attacks, no accounts were compromised and no data was lost.”

While it is the first time that Evernote has been the victim of a DDoS attack, it has before come into the firing line of hackers. Last year the company suffered a security breach by a hacker with some user data being accessed.

“In our security investigation, we have found no evidence that any of the content you store in Evernote was accessed, changed or lost. We also have no evidence that any payment information for Evernote Premium or Evernote Business customers was accessed,” the company said at the time in a press statement.
