More wireless internet traffic than wired by 2018

The world is a-changing: by 2018, Cisco says more internet traffic will be generated by wireless internet-connected things than ones that jack in with wires. In other words, there will be more bits of tech connected to the internet over WiFi and other wireless technologies than ones that require a cable.

That’s what Cisco’s Visual Networking Index predicts, based on the stats and figures that the networking equipment company collects. The actual ratio they predict is 39 percent wired devices to 61 percent wireless ones by 2018.

Cisco also predicts that by the same time, the amount of internet traffic generated by PCs will have decreased to 43 percent, down from 67 percent in 2013, with the lion’s share of traffic being generated by smartphones, tablets, TVs and what Cisco calls “machine to machine modules”.

And that’s not all. The amount of internet traffic generated each year will exceed the zettabyte threshold by 2016: that’s one thousand exabytes, which is itself one thousand terabytes. That’s a huge amount of data.

The other prediction that caught our eye is Cisco’s bold belief in the idea that global internet speeds will increase by a factor of two-point-some-change by 2018, going from the 2013 average of 16mbps to a 2018 average of 42mbps.

Of course, this all bodes well for a company that sells the equipment on which the internet is based. I just hope they’re right about that last one.
