Telkom announces its Fibre to the Home plans

State-owned fixed-line provider Telkom today announced its plans to launch superfast broadband for residential customers, detailing which South African suburbs will be under consideration to fibre to the home (FTTH) before the end of the year.

“Today Telkom announced plans to roll out Fibre to the Home to more than 20 SA suburbs before the end of 2014. We hear demands for high internet quality and speed and we are determined to deliver on these demands,” Telkom said in a series of tweets.

The announcement was made as part of the company’s annual financial results presentation, in which it detailed its fundamental goals going forward. “Stabilise operations to achieve growth in the long term; Reposition the business to achieve long term commercial sustainability; and Fulfill [a] key role in transforming [the] South African telecommunications economy,” it said.

The suburbs in South Africa that could benefit from the plans are: Groenkloof, Brooklyn in Pretoria and Houghton Estate, Bryanston, Sandhurst, Westcliff, Rosebank, Craighall, Craighall Park, Illovo, Parktown North, Hyde Park and Parkhurst in Johannesburg; Kloof and Reservoir Hills in Durban; and Foreshore, Bishopscourt, Camps Bay and Plattekloof in Western Cape.

Users who wish to sign up can have a look at the map to see if their area supports Telkom’s FTTH package, called Go Fibre to the Home. If your area falls within the FTTH boundaries, you will be able to get internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps once the service launches.
