South African photographer wins international iPhoneography award

It may be hard to believe, but the header image for this article was shot on an iPhone. In fact, it’s one of the best photos of the last 12 months taken with Apple’s little handset, and was rightly honoured in the annual iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS), with the seventh edition just wrapped up. This particular shot was taken by UK photographer Gerald Collett and took the award for News/Events iPhoneography.

Overall, there were 17 categories snappers could enter, and the winners of each was rewarded with a Gold Bar trophy, while the best three overall also won an iPad Air.

Apparently, photographers from 54 countries entered the awards, including local artist Danny van Vuuren who brought home first prize for having the best photo in the Children category.

“iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) is the first and the longest running iPhone photography competition since 2007. IPPAWARDS has been celebrating the creativity of the iPhone users since the first iPhone has inspired, excited and engaged the users worldwide. Since then every year, IPPAWARDS has selected the best shots among thousands of images submitted by iPhone photographers from 70+ countries around the world. Winners are selected by the jury members in several steps and The Photographer of the Year prize awarded,” the site explains.

Photographer of the Year was awarded to Julio Lucas for his stunning capture of a vast arctic landscape, contrasted by a sole adventurer.
