Socialising with robots for the sake of research

Kodomoroid and Otonaroid are two women from Japan. They can socialise, read the news and Twitter, but also just happen to be life-sized robots who look eerily like real people.

The two robots were unveiled by their creator, robotics professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, at an exhibition called “Android: What is a Human?” at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo.

Both robots will be hosted at the Tokyo museum where visitors will not only be able to see them, but also interact with them. Their intended purpose is to help professor Ishiguro collect data for his research into human-robot interactions, which he hopes will help develop more intelligent robots to be used in a wide range of potential roles in the near future.

“We will have more and more robots in our lives in the future. Technical advances mean robots look and act more human, and that makes us think about our worth,” professor Ishiguro said.

Starting today, visitors can come see Kodomoroid showing off her news reading skills in different voices and languages, while Otonaroid will interact with the public through small, limited conversations.
