Sequels, samurais and Samuel L. Jackson

2009’s Afro Samurai may not have been a smash hit, but that hasn’t stopped a new studio from making a sequel.

Redacted Studios and publisher Versus Evil announced that the game is in development  yesterday via press release, saying “This upcoming third person action adventure includes an original storyline, new playable characters and improved special moves and combos which firmly establishes the franchise as the undisputed leader in dynamic dismemberment. ”

The original Afro Samurai cast players in the role of an afro-sporting black samurai voiced by Samuel L. Jackson who took on enemies with his killer samurai sword and some fancy moves. It was a rather unique concept, blending Japanese samurai action with 1970s soul music and fashion. The game was a fun diversion while it lasted but one that never really found mainstream appeal despite Jackson’s excellent voice work, selling just over 400 000 units in total.

Still, that was enough to justify a sequel. The press statement didn’t mention a release date, though, just that the game is in development for ‘next-gen consoles and PC’, but it promised that more information would follow “over the coming months”. Let’s hope that will include the news that Samuel L. Jackson will be reprising the role.

While we wait for more info on the new game, check out the original Afro Samurai’s trailer to see if this particular mix of funk, soul, samurai swords and big hair is the kind of thing you might be interested in.
