Get your Toeter on with new Afrikaans social network

If your native tongue is Afrikaans, and you would really like to chat and meet people online, there is now a solution for you. Toeter is the world’s first Afrikaans social media network, and was created for people who want to chat to Afrikaans-speaking individuals – much like Facebook and Twitter. Afrikaans is the third-most-spoken mother tongue in South Africa, with about 7 million native speakers, or 13.5% of the population.

“Through the use of #magnets, Toeter lets user speak with one voice and provides the average Joe a platform to voice his opinion. It is also a marketing tool and a source of inspiration for everyone that has a love for Afrikaans,” the site explains in Afrikaans.

According to the website, the site was created for anyone who speaks Afrikaans – from any background, colour and worldwide. “If you are old, wet behind the ears or young in spirit, here you can complain, joke, or just chat because you can. Afrikaans has never been a language to shy away from issues, and with Toeter users can explore, dream, deliberate and chat.”

The site adds that Toeter can add meaningful new words to the Afrikaans vocabulary, since it will inspire new original words with the energy that will make Afrikaans blossom and grow.

“Toeter is as quick as it is adaptable. Once a user registers for the service, you can start to “toet” to your heart’s desire. Then you are on you own station. On the Toeter highway.”

The service is available through the website, and they are busy working on iOS, Android and BlackBerry apps, which should be ready for download by July. In the meantime, users are encouraged to send suggestions for future app features to the creators.
