According to the Strava Global Heatmap, Sandton (Gauteng) and the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town are the two most popular spots for runners. Cyclists also enjoy the Table Mountain National Park, as well as the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape midlands and coastlines as well as the greater Johannesburg regions.

Strava Metro collected all its data for the map using Strava app user’s smartphones or GPS devices. The heatmap’s dataset includes 77 688 848 rides and 19 66 163 runs. The company says it collects the data to make cycling, running and walking in cities better.

“Using Strava Metro, departments of transportation and city planners, as well as advocacy groups and corporations, can make informed and effective decisions when planning, maintaining, and upgrading cycling and pedestrian corridors,” Strava Metro says.

So, next time you’re out running or cycling and would like to join others like yourself in the most popular and suitable spots, try the Strava Global Heatmap to find one nearest to you.
