12-year-old kid skips school to make Spacepants, the video game

Many gamers, myself included, have dreamed about staying home from school (or work, for that matter) to occupy ourselves with games, but not many of us did it.

12-year-old Sam Smith did. With the help of his game developer dad, he created a clever single-room endless-runner game called Spacepants for iOS and Android.

Basically, the main character, Guy, owns a pair of “space pants” that let him run up walls and walk on ceilings, but one day the pants malfunction and just won’t stop going, leading to Guy having running for his life while collecting hearts and jumping over obstacles. Getting Guy through the one-room obstacle course is where the player comes in.

Check it out:

His dad helped a bit here and there, but the game’s design, characters and obstacles are all Sam’s work. It was made in GameMaker: Studio by YoYo Games, software that does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work which allows creators to focus primarily on the actual content.

The Guardian, where the story originated, says Apple has called Spacepants “one of the best new games on the App Store”.

Sounds intriguing, right? Spacepants is available now, and goes for R14.99 on iOS and R18 on the Google Play Store.

And should you want to try your own hand at making games instead of going to school/work, GameMaker: Studio is free to download at the link above.
