Farewell to Samsung’s plasma television panels

Curved televisions, ultra-high definition televisions and 4K televisions have been on everybody’s lips for at least the last year or so. But as one technology becomes more prominent, inevitably another will be falling by the wayside.

In this case, Samsung SDI has announced that it will be closing down its plasma panel television manufacturing plant by the end of the year, as it shift its focus to the aforementioned Curved and ultra-high definition televisions.

“We plan to continue our PDP TV business until the end of this year, due to changes in market demands. We remain committed to providing consumers with products that meet their needs, and will increase our focus on growth opportunities in UHD TV’s and Curved TV’s (sic),” Samsung said in a statement.

Sales of plasma televisions have declined over the years, with more consumers opting to purchase LCD, LED or OLED televisions set, and this was the exact reason for the shutdown. Citing “the decline in overall demand for plasma display panel televisions” it will end all plasma panel production by November.

Samsung is one of the last companies to make the jump, as Panasonic announced last year that they would stop producing them. At the time it only left Samsung and LG as the major plasma providers, and with Samsung now out of the picture, LG should soon follow suit.
