UCT to offer free online courses in 2015

The University of Cape Town (UCT) will be adding its name to the list of universities around the world offering free online courses, also know as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), with the launch of its UCT MOOCs in 2015.

UCT partnered with British-based MOOC provider FutureLearn to launch the MOOCs, which will include services such as interactive online forums with multiple students in peer-to-peer discussions, and give access to video lectures and course materials in an online format.

Anyone around the world will be able to access the UCT MOOCs, the university says it has taken developing countries into consideration by offering course that appeal to anyone around the world, and will be mindful of the needs of participants from developing country contexts.

“We are aware of the challenges many potential learners face with regards to technology and access. In response, we intend to place special emphasis on accessibility for audiences that are limited by bandwidth provision and device capacities. Engaging with hundreds of learners online will require innovative approaches to course design, communications, pedagogy and technology, to ensure the optimum learning experiences for a broad range of people. Such lessons can be applied to enhancing our formal on-campus, blended and online courses,” said professor Sandra Klopper, deputy vice-chancellor at UCT.

According to Klopper, MOOCs are currently not offered in any universities on the African continent, meaning UCT will be the first to do so.

“We believe there is an opportunity to share knowledge generated from our leading academics and researchers, and to showcase the university’s rich array of intellectual and teaching resources,” Klopper said.
