Hearthstone expansion is on the way

If you’ve collected all of the cards in Hearthstone and neither the single-player nor multiplayer portions of the game offer you a challenge any longer, you’ll be pleased to know that Blizzard is bringing out an expansion pack really soon that will solve your problems.

It’s called Curse of Naxxramas, and it was announced yesterday via Blizzard’s Battle.net website. The single-player expansion brings new enemies to fight, new cards to unlock and a “Heroic Mode” that ramps up the challenge significantly, even if you’re a Hearthstone veteran with what you believe to be a bullet-proof deck.

It’s not a one-shot expansion, though, it is made up of five individual updates – or “wings” as Blizzard calls them – that will release one week after each other. The first one is called Arachnid Quarter, and it will be followed by Plague Quarter, Military Quarter, Construct Quarter, and Frostwyrm Lair.

Blizzard’s site says players who log into Hearthstone during the first month of availability will get Arachnid Quarter for free, and thereafter will have to pay 700 in-game gold or real cash for each subsequent wing. Players that miss the window will need to buy the first update, but players who want to buy them all with money will get a slight discount. Here’s the breakdown:

You don’t absolutely have to pay, of course, you can choose instead to earn gold by beating people in the Arena and completing the game’s daily quests that offer gold as a reward, and use that cash to unlock your desired wing(s).

There’s no hard and fast release date for Curse of Naxxramas, but Gamespot has reported that Blizzard have indicated they expect the first wing to drop in July sometime. Keep your Battle.net client open and updated to be among the first to know when it goes live.
