Get a free coffee when you pay with your phone

Mobile payments are gaining huge traction across the world, but for some reason South Africans seem to be slightly apposed to the technology. The act of paying for goods and service through a mobile phone is seen as some kind of magic by some, but can be hugely beneficial to that that use it properly.

In order to encourage mobile payments in South Africa, Cape Town-based mobile payment company FlickPay has partnered with coffee franchise Vida e Caffé so that caffeine-lovers can purchase a cup of coffee by using their system countrywide.

If you use FlickPay to buy a cup of joe at Vida e Caffè, you will get your first cappuccino for free. You just have to download the app, link your credit card, and scan it to pay.

“Flickpay is the only mobile payment app that is integrated into the point of sale, so that means that the cashier can actually get confirmation of the payment right there on the till. It’s great to be a part of the evolution of mobile payment,” FlickPay Managing Director Trent McLelland said in a media interview.

Vida e Caffè is also in the process of developing their own app, which you can use to pay for coffee. “Our app will be launched in October and customers will be able to pay for their coffee without worrying about swiping their credit or loyalty card. I was looking for something that was simple to use and help give our customers a seamless payment process at the POS,” the company said.

FlickPay is part of the powered by wiGroup, which has worked on mobile payment options for companies like MTN, Shoprite Checkers, Pick n Pay, Engen, KFC and Vodacom.

There is actually a host of mobile payment options available for South African shoppers, as Standard Bank recently launched their SnapScan payment app, and in February Emerge Mobile launched The Edge, a payment card reader.
