Gaming on PC is better than on consoles

Analyst firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has published a report that essentially says PC gaming is superior to console gaming thanks to the PC platform’s superior hardware.

Not only that, but the market for hardware that makes PC gaming better is worth twice as much as console hardware sales, as reported by MCVUK.com. This is despite the questionable health of the PC market as a whole, which has been in decline for a number of years now.

Gamers are apparently investing more in their gaming rigs and gaming PCs, upgrade parts and peripherals are all experiencing what JPR calls “strong and healthy” sales. The analyst firm goes on to say that PC gamers also don’t just use their PCs for games, they do content creation and business-related tasks as well which also benefit from the superior performance made possible by high-end hardware.

What’s interesting about the research is that JPR also says that due to the advances in processing, storage and graphics technology available to PC gamers, that they get an “overall better gaming experience” than that offered by consoles. Gaming on a PC allows for multi-monitor setups, the ability to play games at far higher resolutions than consoles support and much quicker load times thanks to the speed of solid-state storage technology.

Most tellingly, JPR says consoles will struggle to keep up as PC performance increases, no surprise given that hardware won’t change for the duration of each console’s respective lifespan, whereas PC hardware is refreshed with new models, better performance and improved power consumption every six months.

Gaming on a PC is more expensive, to be sure, but the results of even a small hardware upgrade every year can potentially deliver better frame rates, crisper graphics and faster load times than the PS4 and Xbox One can provide. JPR notes that even mid-range gaming rigs are now capable of gaming at 2 560 x 1 440, making PC gaming – even on a budget – a very attractive prospect.

PC gaming may be on the verge of a renaissance, then. Steam, the PC’s most popular digital game storefront is seeing more people than ever making use of the service, and the fact that both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are, essentially dedicated gaming PCs (hardware-wise) means it’s easier than ever for developers to port their console games across to the platform, giving developers every reason in the world to start bringing their titles across to PC.
