The Evil Within is coming for you a week early

October is going to be utterly insane for gamers – there are so many high-profile releases then that it’s going to be difficult to choose which to get. New and unproven games like The Evil Within are up against some stiff competition, so it came as no real surprise when IGN reported that its publisher, Bethesda, decided to move its release date forward by a week.

The Evil Within was initially scheduled to come out on the 21st in North America, which was one of two very popular dates (the other being the 7th), but yesterday at QuakeCon Bethesda announced a new date: October 14th. That’s a pretty shrewd move by the Elder Scrolls publisher as it is smack-bang in the middle of a great many high-profile releases, competing only with the Borderlands pre-sequel and a game called Raven’s Cry on the day.

Since we’re not North America, we’ll be getting the game on the 17th of October so just three days later but still in the quiet window between the 7th and 21st.

For those not in the know, The Evil Within is a survival-horror game by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami that promises a disturbing amount of blood and gore along with a thrill-ride of a story. I’m not sure yet whether this is good news or not – the game’s trailer looks like it’s going to scare the pants off of gamers. See for yourself – this video is of real people reacting to the game:

Here’s a rundown of the game’s setting, taken from the official site: “While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners encounter a mysterious and powerful force. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead.”

If that doesn’t sound like the premise of a deeply disturbing game, you have a stronger stomach than I.
