[Interview] Why Maker Faire is coming to Joburg

In a different world, we don’t just make South Africa’s most awesome tech news site. We also produce stories for ZDNet’s African Enterprise Blog, which is published from the US and Europe. Like this one that was published today but which really deserves a link from here too.

It’s an interview with Emeka Okafor, who’s one of a team of volunteers bringing the international celebration of crafting and hardware hacks, Maker Faire, to Johannesburg in a couple of month’s time. It’ll be the fourth time Maker Faire has been to Africa, and it’s first visit below the equator here.

From the interview:

“The most important thing for us is about changing the way African makers and inventors see themselves,” he said. “These individuals represent something very important in society, there’s a common thread that connects them.”

When it gets here, Maker Faire Africa will be part of the Fak’ugesi Digital Africa festival in central Joburg – watch this space for more on that.
