One Windows to run them all

Yesterday Microsoft had its quarterly earnings call in where it announced a drop in earnings of 7.1% after it acquired Nokia’s handset division, the largest seller of smartphones running the Windows Phone operating system.

The Windows Phone operating system is one of three that Microsoft produces with Windows 8 for desktop, notebooks PCs and Windows RT for tablets all being offered various configuration of hardware. All of that is set to change as Microsoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella announced that Windows would cease to be three separate operating systems and would merge instead into one, overarching OS that encompassed every single device type.

“This means one operating system that covers all screen sizes,” Nadella said to analysts during the results call. “We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes.”

It’s something that has been coming for a long time with Microsoft announcing that it would allow developers to create ‘Universal Windows Apps’ which run on phones, tablets as well as the company’s Xbox One gaming console. The update will more than likely come during 2015 when Microsoft is expected to release the next version of its desktop operating system, Windows 9, which is currently under development under the codename ‘Threshold‘.

Leaked screenshots of a build being tested internally at Microsoft showed a version in which the traditional Windows Start menu had been brought back which is expected to be a part of the Threshold update for desktop users who have been less-than-pleased with the tiled Start screen that arrived with Windows 8.
