Eight million new customers added to Vodacom, data still a big driver

Competition for the biggest piece of the mobile network pie in South Africa is at an all-time high, as competing service providers slash prices, increase data bundles and launch various promotions. But even with that, Vodacom managed to add eight million new subscribers to their network in the last year.

Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub said that by adding the additional eight million subscribers, it has brought their total number of subscribers to almost 60 million. The figures were revealed this morning (Thursday) as part of Vodacom’s quarterly financial update.

The group announced that its revenue for the quarter was R18.3 billion, which translates to an increase of 4.3% for the same period last year. The growth in its revenue is largely to thank for an increase in the demand for data, which together with its various international businesses, have once again been the largest contributors to Vodacom’s growth.

The demand for data has been fuelled by the prominence of LTE and more smartphone models capable of connecting to it – which led to Vodacom having to add more LTE sites.

“Supporting this increase in traffic in South Africa, we added another 473 LTE sites in the quarter, an increase of more than 50%. On top of this we added another 293 3G sites, and 74.5% of our sites are now connected using our own self-provided high capacity transmission. This increase in capacity has the dual benefit of giving us the best possible platform from which to grow the South African business as well as the ability to reduce prices on a sustainable basis,” Joosub said in a press statement.

Specifically for South Africa, the group’s revenue in the country increased by 1.7% to R14 791 million driven by a 16.9% growth in equipment revenue.
