Risen 3 promises a return to its roots

Risen and Gothic are rather unique role-playing games from European developer Piranha Bytes, but despite a dedicated following both franchises remain somewhat of an acquired taste.

To drum up some enthusiasm for the third instalment in the Risen series, which releases mid-August, Piranha Bytes has put out an eleven-minute video showing how Risen 3: Titan Lords has “returned to its roots”. That means it will, in theory, offer the same sort of concepts that made the first Risen and Gothic games so popular: a huge, hand-crafted open world full of interesting (but possibly cheesily-acted) characters, plenty of things to kill and gorgeous graphics.

Since I’m a fan of both Gothic and Risen and have played and finished all five games, I dearly hope that the “roots” they’re referring to don’t include the very clumsy swordplay from those games. I don’t mind their general approach – you can’t dominate everyone in combat from the get-go and skills must be acquired and honed in order to win – but I found that even when I was skilled up, the awkward control system and strangely languid hero turned many battles into frustrating encounters. The video seems to show a tweaked and somewhat enhanced combat system, so hope is high.

I also hope they have worked on the terribly slow load times on the Xbox 360 that annoyed me no end about Risen 2.

I’m happy Piranha Bytes has moved away from the cheesy pirate theme from Risen 2, which didn’t go down too well with fans (me included and I like cheese), so I’m really looking forward to the new game. It’s out on August 15 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
