Modders bringing more Portal 2 to Portal 2, for free

The only thing better than incredible games are incredible games that are free, and that’s exactly what you’ll be getting next year thanks to a team of modders who working on a total-overhaul mod for Portal 2.

It’s called Portal Stories: Mel, and it promises another 20+ levels of mind-bending quantum puzzling and a story that’s set between Portal 1 and Portal 2. It stars someone called Mel, a character that was apparently meant to appear in the original Portal 2 but never made the cut.

Portal Stories: Mel is currently on Steam Greenlight, the programme that gauges gamer interest in ongoing projects on Valve’s Steam gaming store/platform, with a small story teaser:

“In the early years of Aperture: Science Innovators, Cave Johnson’s scientists rushed to get everything working to catch up with the growth of the company. Not everything worked as it should have. Mel unfortunately took part in a faulty test called the Aperture: Science Innovators Short-Term Relaxation Vault, falling asleep for years. Now, with a fake Cave Johnson telling her she needs to escape the facility and a new device called the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, her mind races with questions. “Who is this imposter Cave Johnson? What happened to the facility and its staff? What happened to me?”

Want to see if it looks any good? Check out the trailer the modders put out:

The group says Portal Stories: Mel will be released in Q1 2015 (so before April of that year) and it will be completely free. The only requirement is that you own a copy of Portal 2, and really, after all those sales who doesn’t? If you don’t, it’s worth getting even at full price (which at the moment is $19.99).
