Shadow of Mordor arrives early

Remember that open-world game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth fantasy world, Shadow or Mordor? The one that looked a lot like Assassin’s Creed dressed in new clothes? Well, it’s coming out sooner than expected.

Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced via its local representatives that Shadow of Mordor is coming not on the 7th of October, 2014, but the 3rd. That’s a whole four days early.

In the same announcement, they showed off a new story trailer that sheds quite a bit of light on the wraith that’s attached to the main hero, Talion, as in who he is, a bit about his backstory and how he’s connected to the Rings of Power and the Dark Lord, Sauron.

The trailer looks to be about as intense as the PEGI 18 rating suggests the game will be, and while there isn’t a lot of overt blood and guts in the clip, it appears that aspects of the story are rather heavy, with loss of family through murder and suchlike taking centre stage.

Of course, it’s possible to write it off as the usual fantasy guff with the thinnest of pretexts for the protagonist’s actions (which will no doubt involve a great deal of blood-letting), but this actually looks pretty good, and its tone surprisingly convincing.

The more I see of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, the more intrigued I become. Watch the trailer below, and see if you agree:
