Unique Mandela LEGO figures raise R5 300 for school libraries

A set of three bespoke Nelson Mandela LEGO minifigs has been sold on South African auction site Bidorbuy for a whopping R5 300. The money will to raise money for LEGO educational and play areas through the Nelson Mandela Day Library Initiative. The Initiative builds libraries into shipping containers for underprivileged schools in South Africa.

The winner of the Mandela minifigs, who goes by the handle Look or Buy, will be able to select three iconic moments from Madiba’s life to capture as ABS plastic manikins.

They’re not quite the most valuable minifigs ever, but if they carry official LEGO branding they might well be one day. The most expensive to date are the series 10 Mr Gold, which were made by LEGO as official parts of a set. 5 000 of the chromed minifigs were made and hidden inside sealed collectable bags, and that particular character has switched hands for R10 000 before. Custom figs from a set of Marvel one-offs made for Comic Con a couple of years ago sell for up to R40 000.

The highest price we know of paid for a set of minifigs is a pair of Iron Man and Captain America characters distributed as gifts at Toy Fair 2012. Together they’re worth around R20 000 to collectors.

But it’s not really about the value of the minifigs is it? R5 200 will put plenty of LEGO labs into schools around the country, and that’s awesome.

The auction was was supported by Participate for Good and The LEGO Movie.
