HTC One (M8) Windows Phone coming soon

We’ve only just had a chance to put the Android-running HTC One (M8) through it’s paces, but if rumours are to be believed, it looks like we’ll get a second bite of the cherry when the phone arrives running Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 operating system later this year.

The news comes from both The Verge and one of the most reliable sources in the industry, @evleaks, who both confirm that they have inside knowledge of HTC’s impending Windows Phone flagship smartphone in development. Sources over at Engadget have the name of the phone pegged as the HTC “One (M8) for Windows” however we hope that common sense prevails and the Taiwanese company calls the smartphone the HTC One W8.

The information is backed up by the release of the initial developer documents for the first update to its Windows Phone 8.1 operating system which makes provision for smart cases like the LG QuickCircle case used by its G3, or HTC’s DotView case for the HTC One (M8). The documentation explains how manufacturers will be able to specify special apps to run when the cover is closed as well as what happens when the cover is opened.

The good news for consumers is that Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia hasn’t stopped a manufacturer like HTC from making Windows Phone-based smartphones, in fact, now that Nokia has been assimilated into the Microsoft fold it appears that other manufacturers are now feeling that there is a fair chance to compete on the platform.

With the positive attention that the HTC One (M8) has been receiving as well as Microsoft’s new, faster cadence for Windows Phone updates could an HTC One W8 be enough to kickstart the third major mobile OS into the big leagues?
