Samsung planning a R212 million factory in Durban

Following in the footsteps of Hisense, Samsung South Africa has announced its plans to build a $20 million (R212 million) television manufacturing plant in South Africa. The factory will be located in the Dube Trade Port in Durban and is planned to be operational by the end of 2014, with further plans to continue construction until 2018.

“This project is the result of close collaboration between Samsung and the South African authorities – at national and provincial level. Samsung remains the leading consumer electronics brand in South Africa and we are determined to add value to the South African community in which we operate,” says Matthew Thackrah, the deputy managing director of Samsung Electronics South Africa. “The establishment of new plant is another step in our goal to create new business opportunities, products and technology.”

As with Hisense who expanded into other electronics after beginning by only manufacturing televisions at its plant in Atlantis in the Western Cape, we expect that Samsung will increase the products that it manufactures at the new factory over time. In fact, in previous discussions that htxt.africa had with senior members of Samsung’s management team they have confirmed an interest in building smartphones locally for the entire African region.

Details on the amount of jobs being created by both the construction project and the eventual production operation are still forthcoming from Samsung, but it’s still heartening to see major brands investing heavily in South Africa and creating jobs.
