Almost 4% of world’s population is on Twitter

These days it’s pretty hard to get away with someone not telling you what their Twitter handle is, and to “follow” someone was become an increasingly common thing to say. And there is a perfectly logical reason for that: microblogging site Twitter has increased their monthly active users by 24% over the last year, to 271 million users.

That means that just under 4% (3.8% if you want to be exact) of the world’s population is active monthly users on the service. That doesn’t even include the number of people that make use of the service less than once a month.

And where do most people access their Twitter feed? According to its quarterly financial results statement, 211 million users of the 271 million access Twitter on their mobile phones. That’s 78% of users that make use of the app – a 29% increase from last year.

While its numbers might seem impressive, it’s still dwarfed by mega-popular social network Facebook, who had over 820 million daily active users on average in June 2014. Of those, 654 million were active on their mobile phones.

In terms of Twitter’s financial status, it saw a massive jump in revenue, shooting up 124% compared to last year. Their revenue for the second quarter of the year ended on $312 million, while suffering $145 million in second quarter losses.

“Our strong financial and operating results for the second quarter show the continued momentum of our business,” said Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter, in a press statement.

“We remain focused on driving increased user growth and engagement, and by developing new product experiences, like the one we built around the World Cup, we believe we can extend Twitter’s appeal to an even broader audience.”

The fact that Twitter ended the quarter with non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.02 set the market into a bit of a spin as investors see the potential for further growth. In after-hours trading Twitter’s stock price rose by 20%, pushed further by another 10% later on to end the day at 30% more in stock price.
